ORDER IN THE HOUSE
By STEPHANIE ROSENBLOOM
To listen to Helen Kuhl, editor in chief of Closets, a trade magazine
published in Lincolnshire, Ill., one might believe every woman in America
has a well-organized closet.
Kuhl says the closet organization industry has skyrocketed in the last four
years. Revenue at California Closets is up 16 percent in 2004 at $241
And Barry Izsak, the president of the National Association of Professional
Organizers, said his group took 13 years, from 1985 to 1998, to reach a
membership of 1,000, but only five more to reach 2,000; since then, he
added, the number has grown to nearly 4,000.
If you're still knee-deep in piles of laundry and jumbles of shoes, here are
some resources for cleaning house - at a cost.
INTO THE CLOSET:
$400 - 30,000 range in price of closet systems sold by California Closets.
$3 billion in annual revenue for U.S. companies selling closet organization
Like clothes, closet systems are available in varying styles, from the
simple to the sophisticated.
5 places to turn for help:
- The Container Store, which has a location at 7200 N. Kendall Drive in
Miami (305) 670-8181) has designers who do free consultations, but there is
an installation fee for ripping out an old closet. For a 6-foot-wide,
8-foot-tall, 24-inch-deep closet, the cost starts at $400. (800) 786-7315;
- California Closets sends a consultant to your home, and will build a new
storage system. A closet that is 8-feet high by 8-feet wide and 3 1/2-feet
deep costs about $1,200 in melamine and $5,000 in wood. (800) 274-6754;
- Poliform's sleek walk-in closets are available in melamine laminate, woods
like oak and wenge, and frosted, mirrored or painted glass. Prices start at
$900 per linear foot. Miami store number: (888) 765-4367;
- In Palm Beach and New York City, Clos-ette will inventory your wardrobe
and build a custom cabinet. A closet that is 8-feet wide by 8-feet high and
3 1/2-feet deep costs about $3,500 in maple. (877) 803-9797; clos-ette.com.
